Rome is always a good idea. And when my friend Alissa called me up and asked if I wanted to meet her in the eternal city, I just couldn’t resist.
However, I will say I was a bit hesitant going for a weekend in Rome in the middle of summer. This city is known to be one of the most popular destinations in all of Europe year-round, and the month of August would definitely be the worst.
But to my surprise, it wasn’t as bad as I thought! Yes of course there were crowds, but not enough to affect our trip in Italy.
Since we both had been there years prior, we decided to take it easier than we would have if it was our first time around. We saw all the major sites (at least from the outside) and still had plenty of time for an aperitif in the evening.
I originally thought that a weekend in Rome would be too rushed, even for veteran visitors, however, we were still able to see and do everything we wanted to.
Sure I could have used a couple of extra nights to try more dinner spots, but for the actual city itself, we were able to manage just fine.
Below is a list of top sites to see during a weekend in Rome.
Top Sites To See In Rome
- Colosseum
- Vatican City
- Vatican Museums
- Sistine Chapel,
- St. Peter’s Basilica
- St. Peter’s Square
- Roman Forum
- Pantheon
- Trevi Fountain
- Piazza Navona
- Spanish Steps
- Palatine Hill
- Campo dei Fiori
- Altare della Patria
There are still more places to see and museums to tour, however, if you are limited on time, these are the areas you are going to want to check out.
If you are planning a trip to Italy and have the time, try to stay longer in Rome, especially if you’ve never been before.
I personally just always prefer the smaller destinations compared to the larger cities and wanted to save some extra days for our time in the Amalfi Coast that was soon to follow.
All and all, the best part of my trip to Rome was being able to reconnect with an old friend in Europe. There is nothing I love more than traveling with great company.
Thanks Alissa for an incredible trip! You’ve been an excellent travel buddy and I can’t wait for our next adventure 🙂
Now here are some photos from our trip to Rome!
