Part of the reason I’ve always been drawn to living in Spain is because of the country’s vibrant culture and festivals. After living in Barcelona for just a year, I have seen more parades, music festivals, and impromptu celebrations than I ever had in my entire life.
As it turns out, my neighborhood in Barcelona loves a good party. I currently live in the Gracia district of Barcelona which is about a 30-minute walk from the main city center. Although it’s not very well-known by the tourists, it’s a great local community filled with quaint restaurants and bustling pedestrian streets.
What I love about this area is that it’s always hosting some parade or party for just about every occasion. However, there is one event that is always able to draw a crowd to this lesser-known area. Gracia’s biggest claim to fame would have to be their annual Fiesta de Gracia street festival (or Festa Major de Gracia in Catalan).
Every year this neighborhood festival takes place from August 15th to the 21st, always starting on the same national holiday in Spain. The Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona puts together a week-long party filled with drinking, dancing, and impressive street decorations for both residents and outsiders to enjoy.
Around 20 narrow streets throughout Gracia hold a friendly competition of who can come up with the most creative and elaborate theme. Each street that participates is completely transformed into a different genre. Outerspace, under the sea, and barnyards are just a few that were created this year.
Typically how it works is neighborhood associations come together and create these beautiful masterpieces. Paper mache, colorful fabrics, and even old plastic bottles and newspapers are all used in the street decorations. Most of the decor is created from recycled materials and then transformed into colorful flowers, hula skirts, jellyfish, or whatever else their creativity can come up with.
This year, I just so happened to live on the busiest street in all of Gracia. Although it was an incredible experience to be right in the middle of all the action, I wished I was living just a few streets over where there wasn’t a crowd of people partying outside until 3 or 4 in the morning.
However, aside from the late-night noise, we had an amazing time at the festival!
Fiesta Mayor De Gracia Activities
During Fiesta Major de Gracia, the streets are filled with people young and old. All the local restaurants set up makeshift bars right on the street and sell beers, mojitos, and other fun cocktails.
Every main square throughout the neighborhood builds giant stages for live music and performers throughout the week. There is a schedule of all the events that you can buy for one euro sold on street corners throughout the Gracia district.
While the main squares and plazas are fun to check out, I prefer venturing to one of the side streets that’s participating in the festivities for the dancing and the drinking. Even on the streets in the middle of the neighborhood, there are impromptu bars and tiny stages that are going off all night long.
During the day, you can sometimes see the human towers, or Castellers, that are commonly associated with Catalan traditions and celebrations. By night, that’s when you get more of the party crowd coming for the free concerts and cheap drinks.
La Fiesta de Gracia is one of the most popular festivals in Barcelona by the locals, and it’s easy to see why. Anyone going young or old, tourist or local, can have a memorable time at Fiesta de Gracia.
If you are looking for fun street festivals with lots of Catalan culture, Festa Mejor de Gracia is worth a visit. Even though I don’t recommend planning an entire trip just to see this neighborhood festival, it’s definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Spain during the month of August!
